A fast-paced mystery set in 1850's London, with clever dialogue, a sassy heroine, and plenty of intrigue. The author flips most gender conventions of the day on their heads to bring us an all-female spy agency, so there is plenty of a feminist undercurrent running through this book for those who enjoy a bit of a twist to their historical fiction. This book is... haunting. It calls to question how people could have accepted slavery, and makes you rethink everything you've ever known about history. This is one of those books every person should read.

I did not intend to re-read this book during the anniversary of the sisters' deaths, but I'm very happy to honor their memory with such an incredible book. If you aren't familiar with Las Mariposas, or Trujillo's despotic regime, then this book is a fantastic introduction! Alvarez embodies the spirit of the four sisters, and gives them new life beyond their martyrdom. I found myself falling back in love with these women, and desperately hoped the story would end in a different way. I honestly don't have enough words for how much I love this book--it's absolutely beautiful.I did not intend to re-read this book during the anniversary of the sisters' deaths, but I'm very happy to honor their memory with such an incredible book. Every morning for the last several decades, 88-year-old Maud eats the same breakfast. She goes about her daily mundane routine, appearing like nothing more than a humble old woman who is hard of hearing and easily confused. Who would ever suspect her of killing just about anyone who even mildly inconveniences her or gets in her way of living a peaceful and quiet life? This collection of crime stories is ridiculously fun and funny and an excellent subversion of the hagsploitation genre, where a cunning and vindictive old woman uses stereotypes about her age group to her advantage, allowing her to get away with serial murder.Every morning for the last several decades, 88-year-old Maud eats the same breakfast. It can be intimidating to read a book that has as much hype as Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, which is part of the reason why I put it off for so long. What if I didn't like it as much as everyone else? What if--horror of horrors--it was actually a Really Bad Book That Made Me Question Everyone's Collective Taste And Wonder If We're Okay As A Society?? Fortunately for me (and for everyone else who has the glorious idea to read this book), Emily Wilde more than exceeded expectations! Full of incomparable wit, characters that make me want to squeal with delight, and faeries that are actually scary, I am happy to say that this book is 1000% worth the hype.It can be intimidating to read a book that has as much hype as Emily Wilde's Encyclopaedia of Faeries, which is part of the reason why I put it off for so long. Full of atmospheric prose, eerie imagery, and characters pulled straight out of myth, this duology is the *ultimate* fall read. I really enjoyed the books in their physical form, but Matthew Lloyd Davies has elevated what was already an extremely good story into something truly outstanding. I'll revisit this audiobook time and time again, right when the leaves start to change colors. The equivalent of walking through a forest, the crunch of twigs underneath your feet, with something magical just around the bend.Full of atmospheric prose, eerie imagery, and characters pulled straight out of myth, this duology is the *ultimate* fall read. In 1954, A Star Is Born premiered to both critical and public acclaim, with moviegoers coming out in hoards to watch Judy Garland's great comeback. Everyone (and I mean, *everyone*) declared the movie a masterpiece... Except some complained it was a little too long. Thus began the film's downfall. Ronald Haver writes about the origins of this musical, the behind-the-scenes filming, and the aftermath, when the studio that knowingly paid for this epic movie musical decided to cut out important scenes, butchering the integrity of the film. It wasn't until the 80's that Haver himself began a restoration project to repair the damage that had been done decades before. If you're interested in film history, in Judy Garland, in preserving art, or if you're just looking for non-fiction that's so compelling it practically turns the pages itself, you absolutely MUST read this book. My favorite book of the year, by far!In 1954, A Star Is Born premiered to both critical and public acclaim, with moviegoers coming out in hoards to watch Judy Garland's great comeback. A fascinating biography about the mysterious, the mercurial, and the much adored (and applauded) Greta Garbo, who essentially "disappeared" after a career of only twenty years. This is as much about Garbo, as it is about the people who loved her. If you're as fascinated by Old Hollywood as I am, or even if you're curious how the world has historically treated those most famous, you should check this book out! I, for one, will never recover from what I learned from this tome; namely, that Greta Garbo at one point had wanted to star as Dorian Gray in an adaptation of Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, with Marilyn Monroe co-starring as one of Dorian's many flings(!!!!). What I would not give to see that movie!A fascinating biography about the mysterious, the mercurial, and the much adored (and applauded) Greta Garbo, who essentially "disappeared" after a career of only twenty years. A deeply absurd satirical novel that is one long intellectual dunk on the Victorian era and all of its many eccentricities and flaws. The narrative is as stitched together as the Frankenstein-esque protagonist, creating a truly unique reading experience (a book within a book within a book, a neverending metatextual story). I wasn't expecting the book to be this funny, nor was I expecting such a thorough case for socialism. It's weird, sure, but if you happen to like weird and challenging books, give this one a go!A deeply absurd satirical novel that is one long intellectual dunk on the Victorian era and all of its many eccentricities and flaws. Maria McCann is pure genius because she has taken a character that is, quite honestly, a horribly despicable man, but by delving into his psyche and the emotional turmoil he feels after he commits atrocious acts... You begin to sympathize and even like him. As a reader, you find yourself questioning your own nature, because you excuse Jacob's horrendous violence, because you secretly want his story to end peacefully, because you still hold out hope that maybe, just maybe, he is capable of being a better person. Her writing is masterful.Maria McCann is pure genius because she has taken a character that is, quite honestly, a horribly despicable man, but by delving into his psyche and the emotional turmoil he feels after he commits atrocious acts...
