This is such a beautifully told mystery which celebrates several distinct characters and the California desert. I will relish the opportunity to discuss this in a book club! A wonderful character-driven & place-based literary mystery of deeply affecting family bonds which reverberate like music in every character! Much more than a ‘who done it?’, the book opens with Nora learning the news of the apparent accidental death of her Moroccan immigrant father. Also, the audiobook is read by an excellent full cast of readers. This is such a beautifully told mystery which celebrates several distinct characters and the California desert. Enchanting, sentimental & mystical! This is a rewarding read for the patient reader who is looking for thoughtful Earth-bound magical realism. The natural world is a vibrant participant within the story.
This place-based eco-fiction emphasizes Earth’s powerful forces, especially earthquakes—in remote parts of India and more of south Asia following after India gained independence from the U.K in 1947. Relationships between eccentric and charismatic people and also human connections to nature are prominent in this novel of linked stories.
First published in India in 2018, this book earned the Tata Literature Live! Award for Debut Fiction. As a journalist, author Shubhangi Swarup has also won awards for gender sensitivity in feature writing. She lives in Mumbai, India.
My gratitude to author Shubhangi Swarup and Random House for sharing an advance review copy of the book.Enchanting, sentimental & mystical! I enjoyed listening to this book in hoopladigital.com. This inspiring debut honors immigrant and Indigenous lives as well as the author's Mexican immigrant parents.
Noé Álvarez took leap of faith as self-discovery and opportunity to connect with an empowering community. This memoir is his coming of age journey and especially relatable to everyone who craves a sense of belonging & purpose.
A particularly vivid moment that stood out:
Chapter 16 “Cougar Country”, alone in a mountainous wilderness a cougar suddenly appears, begins snarling, and prepares to attack. And Noé remembers life-saving advice for surviving animal encounters – thank the animal. He said “thank you” louder and louder until it finally moved away!I enjoyed listening to this book in hoopladigital.com.
