Veteran New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast is great, and if you're going to NYC, grab this along with the traditional guidebooks. It's a quick-reading, hand-drawn guide to New York by someone who grew up there. It's based on a guide she drew for her daughter, who grew up in the suburbs, but was headed to New York for college, so it has sort of a gentle, parental feel to it, which is perfect if you're like me and haven't spent much time in New York City and have a little anxiety about how overwhelming it may be. Also, if you only read the two pages explaining how the grid system of avenues and cross streets is set up in Manhattan, that 5 minutes with this book might save you a ton of time and confusion on the ground later.Veteran New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast is great, and if you're going to NYC, grab this along with the traditional guidebooks. My 5-year old daughter was fascinated by this book, and I wish more books like this were made. It tells a story, based on fact, of the refurbishment of a neighborhood fountain and water garden in New York City, and a summer during which all the kids in the area were invited to let their goldfish "vacation" in the fountain for a few months. A great book about so many things: summer, community, pets, people connecting, and history. My 5-year old daughter was fascinated by this book, and I wish more books like this were made. Elise Gravel is one of my favorite illustrators, but she nails it with this story, too. A young girl hates Saturdays because it's the day of her ballet class, which "is not her thing," because she always ends up kicking, hitting, and bumping into everyone, no matter how hard she tries. Luckily, she runs smack into the teacher at the martial arts school next door, and they realize where her natural interests and inclinations lie: Karate! The cranky ballerina will be cranky no more. Gravel puts the icing on the cake by including, on the last page, a mirror image of her female protagonist, a boy in the karate class whose "thing" appears to be ballet. Hopefully he finds his way to the recently vacated spot in the ballet class next door. Brilliant!Elise Gravel is one of my favorite illustrators, but she nails it with this story, too. Luna moths: You can find them near sweet gum trees this time of year, and they are as interesting as they are beautiful. Then you can try to teach your kids more about them by looking them up on your phone, but as soon as you pull it out they'll ask if they can watch videos of people you don't know playing video games or opening up toys. Amazing how much difference an open lap and a good old-fashioned book can make, and this is a good one.Luna moths: You can find them near sweet gum trees this time of year, and they are as interesting as they are beautiful. Great atlas for kids to ponder facts about the states. Each 2-page spread per state is packed with quirky illustrations of unusual attractions, famous native daughters and sons (the book deserves an A for the diversity of its choices in this category), natural wonders, state birds, capitols, etc. On a recent car trip, my 7-year old was completely hooked on "collecting" license plates he saw from other states, and this book was the perfect companion piece after we returned home.Great atlas for kids to ponder facts about the states. This is a great little book about birding for kids! Includes all the basics, urging kids to start out in their backyards and move out from there. Wonderfully droll illustrations in a New Yorker cartoonish style, with nice commentary from the birds, and a warm, conversational tone from the author. What an amazing non-fiction children's book! It contains a spread for each "curious construction"--text on the left, full page illustration on the right. The topics include famous structures like the Eiffel Tower and Stonehenge, and not-so-famous ones, like the Dyar Tunnels (if, like me, you had never heard of them, the book is worth it just to hear that weird little story) and the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. The range of locations and types of constructions is enormous. My 7-year old and I spent many evenings reading this book, then looking at real photos and learning more about these various places with a quick search on my phone. Michael Hearst's other two books, "Extraordinary People" and "Unusual Creatures" do the same for people and animals, respectively. An enriching series that will leave your kids and you with some new wonders to ponder. What an amazing non-fiction children's book! Great overview of Marie Curie's life. And bonus! It's full of line drawings, which makes it the best source for Marie Curie-related coloring sheets I've ever seen. Grab this book, head to the nearest photocopier, and bang--you've got coloring sheets of Marie Curie heading for the Sorbonne, sifting through tons of pitchblende, and accepting the Nobel Prize from the King of Sweden. This is the most beautiful picture book I've read all year. These days the illustrations usually do most of the work in picture books, but here the prose is the star (although the illustrations are wonderful, too). Not much of a story, but a mysterious and poignant reflection by two kids who stumble onto an abandoned house while hiking in the woods. Their imagining what happened there, and who the home's previous occupants were, reads like a Robert Frost poem for kids. A picture book that takes your breath away. This is the most beautiful picture book I've read all year. A strange book and a good story for middle graders. The first half of the book consists entirely of hand-drawn pictures, a la Selznick's recent works--The Invention of Hugo Cabret, and Wonderstruck. The other half consists of straight prose. The book presents, and resolves, a compelling mystery about a young runaway from a British boarding school who flees to his odd uncle's house in London. Why does his uncle live in a house that seems stuck in Victorian times, and who are the people his nephew hears in the house but never sees? The answers were not anything close to what I would have guessed, and finding them out kept me turning the pages.A strange book and a good story for middle graders.
