This is the first book in a very enjoyable series! I've read the whole series and really enjoyed them. Set in England after the first World War, these books combine the best of historical fiction and mystery genres! Maisie is intelligent and sensitive as she navigates a field dominated by men. The supporting characters are as likable as Maisie. This is the first book in a very enjoyable series! I've read the whole series and really enjoyed them. I highly recommend listening to the audiobook version of "Becoming." Michelle Obama is the reader, and it is wonderful to listen to this book in her voice with her inflections and emphases. This book is for folks who want to encourage their inner creative. It’s a great book by a generous and inspiring teacher/artist. You start where you are right now, and following the suggestions in the book, you delve into your own creative spirit. There are writing activities intended to help you know yourself. You learn where you sabotage yourself and how to avoid that. You also learn what really clicks for you. While it is always a bit intimidating to start on a project like this, the author is so encouraging and forgiving that you find yourself taking baby steps that develop into a wonderful loping run! This book is for folks who want to encourage their inner creative. This is a great book – especially if you are new to instant pots! The recipes we tried were much more successful than any other attempts we have made to cook Indian food. An extremely compelling read. This memoir of a young Somali man gives a gritty look at what it was like to grow up in a lawless world that is constantly at war. It also gives some insight into how “America” looks to Muslim people who exist in a dramatically different culture – as well as how difficult it was to immigrate to the US even before the Muslim ban. While it is at times difficult to read about his tremendous hardships and disappointments, Abdi’s hope and ambition are very uplifting. An extremely compelling read. The Book of Joy helped me to find ways to feel hopeful – while the world seems so unsettled and at times unkind. The Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu are warm, loving, and very spiritual men who come from completely different spiritual traditions. And they are dear friends who laugh together and tease each other playfully. They came together for a week to celebrate the Dalai Lama’s birthday, and Douglas Abrams documented their visit in this powerful book. Compassion, forgiveness, and gratitude are strong themes throughout. These wonderful and very humble men – who have both suffered great injustices - exude joy and love. We are reminded that we all belong to each other and that no matter how bleak things look, there is always hope. Abrams provides valuable background and scientific information to augment the discussions. This is the most compelling book I have read in a long while. The Book of Joy helped me to find ways to feel hopeful – while the world seems so unsettled and at times unkind. I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books when I was a little girl, but I thought this book might be like watching movie sequels – often disappointing. However, it was recommended by a friend, so I gave it a shot, and I loved it! Authorized by the Little House Heritage Trust, this is the same Little House on the Prairie story – just written from Ma’s perspective instead of Laura’s, and it’s written for adults. The author does a wonderful job in keeping the same tone. Reading this book made me feel just the same way I felt when I read Little House as a girl. I was again fascinated by the self-sufficiency of the Ingalls family, and I really enjoyed getting to know Ma better. I could barely sit still when they lost control of the wagon crossing the creek and when they were fighting the prairie fire. I sort of want to describe this book as reading “candy” but it would be more accurate to say it’s like dipping a ginger cookie in hot coffee with cream – delicious and a comfort at the same time (but for grownups)!I loved the Laura Ingalls Wilder books when I was a little girl, but I thought this book might be like watching movie sequels – often disappointing. Who knew how much complexity and variety there is in the life of a tree?! I learned so much reading The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben; now I want to take a walk in the woods to see what stories I can find by observing the trees. Growth pattern, tree groupings, and the subtleties of the bark can tell a lot - even in the heart of winter when I can’t see the leaves. It is fascinating to learn how trees communicate and how they react to changes in the world around them. I found the anthropomorphism of the book both charming and tiresome in turn. For example, at one point the author states that when the water supply was cut off the trees began “screaming.” They made an ultrasonic vibration which he interpreted this way, but who’s to say they weren’t whining or complaining? All in all, I really enjoyed this book!Who knew how much complexity and variety there is in the life of a tree?!
