Expressions of Democracy in Gall Ink
Explore the art and science behind one of America’s most important tools of expression—ink. In this hands-on workshop, participants will discover how iron gall ink was traditionally made, the very same type of ink used to sign the Declaration of Independence. Wendy Holman, Education Program Coordinator with the KU Field Station, will guide participants in examining different types of galls collected locally and teach us how they’re formed. Everyone will get to experiment with different types of pens and quills and create their own artwork inspired by the spirit of democracy, as it means to them. The artwork made at this event will be displayed as an exhibit on the library’s gallery wall for the duration of July. All ages are welcome at this event, but those under 16 will need to come with a guardian.
