Sometimes we get introduced to a book in high school or college that we just can't seem to forget, either because it was brilliant and changed our lives, or the slog was so painful we were scarred for life. Here's a couple I'd like to re-visit as an adult to see how I feel about them now.
Could not hate Holden Caulfield as character more. Could. Not. Might I have more understanding for his plight now? Only one way to find out, I suppose.

"All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." This book might have ignited my fire for social justice at an early age. This one really stuck with me.

I tell myself this was important social commentary on slut shaming and the dangers of being overly pious, which my adult self agrees with, but what a snooze fest! Or was it? Only one way to be sure.

This book totally rocked my world. I felt smart and like I was in the club when I read this in 9th grade because I understood the symbolism. I suspect I'd find the metaphors and take on humanity a little overblown as an adult, but I'd like to check this one out again.

Completely missed the motivations of any of these characters my Sophomore year in high school, but I let Leonardo DiCaprio filled me in at the movies a few years ago. Should I re-read? The book is always better, right?

I got this one, but looking at it now, I didn't deeply understand the depth of the feminism and the plight of the characters. I think this one might improve upon a re-read with more life experience.

Killed. Me. Dead. I honestly cried off and on for week after reading this book in college. I don't know if I could manage it again, or if maybe I'd be less tender knowing what was coming. Such a great and important book, but it really rips your heart out.

I remember being scandalized that there was some mention of prostitution in this book and being mad at the main character because I like him and then I didn't respect him anymore. This might have been my first taste of dealing with flawed characters and not knowing what to make of it. Probably should honor this one with a re-read.

The Lottery I read, possibly in middle school, and again in high school. It blew my mind and I loved the creeping dread as I read it, which possibly fueled my Stephen King obsession.

Okay, fine, my teachers didn't assign any Stephen King, but I read him as a tween and teen anyway and he ignited my fire for reading and literature in a way I'm sure my English teachers were hoping to accomplish. This book was so creepy it haunts me STILL, but I also still think of many of his short stories, too.
