Yrsa Sigurðardóttir is one of my favorite authors. Her stories are incredibly suspenseful, creepy, and atmospheric. "Why Did You Lie?" was no exception. There are a few narratives going on at the same time: four people are dispatched to an isolated, windswept rock off the coast of Iceland to perform maintenance on a lighthouse, a family returns home from a house-swap to find their American guests have disappeared in an unusual way, and a policewoman tries to find out why her husband attempted suicide. I was absolutely glued to this book until I reached the end. At that point, without giving anything away, I was gobsmacked by the ending. Not at all the way I wanted such a great story to end...and my rating went from 5 stars to 4.
