Del Toro and Hogan offer readers a different take on the vampire story. They’re not sparkly or sexy. They’re parasites. Ugly, disgusting, formerly-human, parasites. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, from the CDC has a tough job ahead of him; investigate the strange new contagion spreading through New York and elsewhere; convince the rest of the world that it’s actually facing a vampire plague; last but not least, expose the far-reaching conspiracy behind the plague itself. Luckily, he doesn’t have to go it alone: his partner at the CDC; an exterminator with experience tracking vermin around New York; a gang member ready to turn his guns on vampires; and an old, mysterious professor who possesses knowledge about vampires, their origin, and more importantly, how to kill them. This is a good book for people who are tired of the overly-romanticized version of vampire we’ve seen in modern literature (i.e. Anne Rice and Stephenie Meyer). Want some straight-up blood-thirsty MONSTERS as your villains? Well, here you go! The story is fast-paced, and the audio version of this book was true ear-candy. Ron Perlman read the audio version of this story and did a fantastic job! His thick, husky voice was a good match for the darkness of the story, and his Eastern European accent for characters Setrakian and Fet were spot on.
