A novel that reads like a memoir explores the Muslim immigrant experience in America from the 1960s through the present day. Aktar, the American-born son of Pakstani immigrants, is a writer who hits it big when a generous benefactor invests in his play. The story moves back and forth in time as Aktar shares both his parents' and his personal history in a culture that is suspicious of both their color and religion. The novel also explores the social and economic unraveling that has enriched urban areas at the expense of rural parts of the country since 1970. This rich, deeply complex, work would provoke many interesting and hard discussions at book clubs.
