This is a thriller with 'Girl' in the title so I know not to expect anything ground-breaking. That being said, An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is a disquieting, page-turning, and fun psychological thriller heavy on the psychological. The novel, told from two perspectives, revolves around a psychology study that quickly intensifies into a strange and obsessive match between the study’s participant, Jessica, and the psychiatrist in charge. The events are told in alternating chapters from Jessica’s first-person perspective and the psychiatrist’s second-person point of view observing Jessica. This added to the unease and feelings of being watched I felt throughout An Anonymous Girl. The novel is somewhat reminiscent to Side Effects, one of my favorite thriller movies, which may be a big reason for my favorable view of the book. Some suspension of disbelief is required in relation to the characters’ choices and some tropes and not so subtle writing has to be overlooked, but An Anonymous Girl creates an effective atmosphere that leads to an absorbing result.
