I'm usually a fan of Rodale Press's publications having been a subscriber of their Organic Magazines in the early 80's but this book is kind of disappointing. Over all its an excellent book on beginner's technique but when it comes to grafting it needs a better editing. On page 118 about apical grafting and saddle grafting it the grafting illustration have gotten it all mixed up. On illustration 4-5 it had the stock and scion cut mixed up from the previous pic it started out as a saddle graft and at pic#5 it turns into a apical or cleft graft as a finish illustration. The words didn't match the illust. As a beginner, you'll never get it! Also on page 118 the sample photo of the cleft graft/apical the cambium layer didn't even touch and it supposed to illustrate that to the reader. I am guessing neither the author nor the editor have any knowledge of grafting. As you read on the bud grafting on roses on page 128/130's photo looked less then impressive. Because the cut of bud wood looks pretty shredded up. You need an even clean cut on those to make a honest match from stock to bud. I hope its not my OCD talking or being too much of a perfectionist on my grafting. Its just a little puzzling why they can't find better material to print. I've enough failure on my own little adventure on grafting will not wish that to discourage anyone. Again this is a good book on seed starting and other propagation technique but not for grafting.
