Was this really up for best picture? Really? The filmmakers merge two totally hackneyed indie staples (wacky dysfunctional family with find yourself road trip) in a way that suggests they've just dicovered it. The road is paved with cliches (oh, a moody teen who reads Nietzsche!) and goofy gags (stealing a body) that would work better in "Vacation," which this movie is essentially a better bred version of. Alan Arkin and Steve Carrell both find the soul beneath the shallow writing and the girl is cute, but this is one of the most shameless, overrated movies of 2007. For those who think "Garden State" and "Napoleon Dynamite" embody indie filmmaking.
