This is a very good adaptation of Hans Fallada's last novel, which was based on the true story of 'everyday' resistance by an ordinary couple to the NS regime during the war. Vincent Perez wisely uses a light directorial hand to allow the simplicity of the story to 'tell itself'. Emma Thompson is first rate (what else would we expect?) but Brendan Gleeson steals the screen as the stolid machinist determined to 'do something'. Not to be missed.
