Not Quite Narwhal is incredibly adorable and sweet. The story is all about a little unicorn named Kelp who was raised as a narwhal under the ocean. He understands that he doesn't quite fit in with the narwhals, but doesn't understand why. Then one day he sees a sparkly creature on the land that looks like him. Curious, he follows, stepping out onto a strange new world. When he finds the unicorns, they explain to him what he is, and show him how to do all the cool things they can. Kelp has lots of fun, but he also misses his friends, and they miss him in turn. In the end he makes a decision that many never even consider; he doesn't see it as an either/or situation, he chooses to be part of both worlds. Sima's heartwarming story of acceptance, and discovering one's identity and home is told through concise writing and absolutely adorable illustrations. As an example how cute it is, picture this, Kelp wears a glass helmet with a hole where his horn pokes out. Everything about the art, from the curved creature designs to the soft blues, greens, and greys, evokes a gently, happy feeling in us. Not Quite Narwhal is a well-crafted and truly beautiful picture book. Keep an eye on Jessie Sima, because if this is what she can accomplish in her very first book, imagine what she'll achieve later.
