Based loosely on the events which have occurred in the author's life. A young black man is shot dead by a white policeman. This sets of a train of events, especially as there was an eye-witness. Starr,a 17 year old black girl, who was with Khalil on the night and testifies Khalil was killed unarmed and in cold blood. Starr testifies in front of the Grand Jury at great risk to herself and her family. It is not only the rogue police to be wary of, there is also the black Drug Lords who preside over the very poor communities. Racism, violence, drugs, poverty, cover-ups all form part of this story. A must read.
