Raven, the Pirate Princess

It is no secret that Whitley is one of my all-time favorite comic writers, and him combined with the talents of Stein and Brandt make for one excellent series. Princess: Raven the Pirate Princess is a spin-off of the original Princeless comic, and it definitely lives up to the quality of the original. This series is for an older audience than Princeless, but is still appropriate for all ages (personally, I share this series with my little sister--she loves it!) The story revolves around Raven, the daughter of a pirate king, whose mission is to take the fleet that is rightfully hers back from her scheming brothers. How does she do this? By fixing up her own boat, assembling a crew of kick-butt women, and sailing the open seas with said crew of kick-butt women. On top of this solid plotline, the series also features characters of many different races, body types, sexual orientations, and cultures. Now, if you're worried about whether all are represented well, especially with the writer being a white man, let me try to put some of that at ease--Whitley does go out of his way to get sensitivity readers from the groups he portrays to look over what he's written and point out any issues. While this probably does not catch everything that could be considered problematic (that is absolutely impossible, after all), it does catch quite a bit before the issues are published.
