Back when this movie came out (2012), I was struck by the charm of Greta Gerwig and to date, I think it is her best work. She co-wrote the screenplay with director Noah Baumbach. So much of Frances is Greta, I think. Greta is a 20-something New Yorker trying to figure herself out. She has a very close with relationship with her friend Sophie (Mickey Sumner). Like Frances says, it's like they're lesbians without the sex. For Frances and Sophie, everything is is silly and fun. A man enters the picture. Sophie's ex, Patch, is back in her life and it's cramping Frances' style. Frances is not the most responsible person with regards to money and finds herself moving between apartments. Along the way she tries to fill the void that Sophie left. She has some luck with Benji (Michael Zegan) who teases her about being undateable. Meanwhile, he's lying through his teeth in an effort to impress the women he dates. Gerwig and Baumback have written some characters who seem real and relatable. There are a lot of funny moments ...... not funny ha ha (pun intended).
