I really liked, and really wanted to love, this book - it's unusual for a fantasy title in that it has next to no action and is completely focused on character development. It's completely a coming of age story, centered on Maia learning to navigate a life that he wasn't prepared for, while trying to reconcile his present responsibilities with his traumatic past. The only reason I haven't given this five stars is because character name / title conventions were exceedingly difficult to get a handle on, and it distracted me from the story. While I respect the effort that Addison put into the language, the names and titles were all so similar that I had a hard time telling remembering which character was which.
