The first Spenser novel, it's from 1973, and one can see why it was the first in a successful and lengthy series. Non-stop action, wit and sarcasm, the mob, and an interesting dab of sex - that's a formula for longevity. Our P.I. takes on a case of a missing medieval manuscript which becomes murder by Chapter 3. The author gets right to it and throws in complications to follow. In Spenser's effort to help the young lady falsely accused, he encounters the 1970s underground, left-wing movement. Memories, memories.
