Fritz runs out to the meadow to play alone, instead of staying near the house. He is caught by the evil wizard Hatschi Bratschi, who travels the world in his hot air balloon, looking for children to catch and eat. Lucky for Fritz, the wizard soon falls out of the balloon and into a well, but Fritz cannot stop the balloon from carrying him far away. After flying over various countries and having close calls with other villains, the balloon lands at Hatschi Bratschi's palace. The servants accept Fritz as their new master. The first thing he does is free the children the wizard has imprisoned. They have a grand feast, and then Fritz and the other children fly home in the balloon.
