Kinda all over the place, but Sonny's like that and it does get to some pretty nice places.
Absolutely wonderful! Forget that this is Sonny Rollins' 80th birthday concert. This CD features one of jazz's greatest performers in top form. It's still there--the gentle, raspy tone, the sharp sense of humor and the outpouring of spontaneous musical ideas one after another. Sonny plays four different solos on the blues "Sonnymoon for Two" in a pianoless trio setting, each solo getting more abstract. (He is joined midway by Ornette Colman) It's a clinic on jazz improvisation. Other top jazz musicians appearing with him include Jim Hall, Roy Hargrove, Roy Haynes, Christian Mcbride and Bob Cranshaw. Sonny is the last of the old masters--it's great to still have him around, still playing so brilliantly!
