A subtle and powerful story of one woman's journey to expand her life and develop her mind. Kevin Kline is awesome as her mentor, not just for agreeing to be her partner in chess but in his crafty and supportive role in challenging her self attitude. Highly recommended!

who knew chess could be so intimate and sensual - yet chaste.

Cute but basically fluff.

Nice, quiet movie about a woman who develops an interest in learning chess after she watches a couple enjoying each other's company while playing a game. She soon becomes rather compulsive in her learning of the game, but masters its intricacies soon enough to compete.

Kevin Kline is in this movie and his French is easy to follow, but as usual, the French ppl are hard to understand.

Very, very odd movie. Why does she get fascinated by chess? Almost obsessed. Is it the romance of the first people she sees playing the game? But that doesn't seem to be enough for the long term. As she, herself, says, she doesn't know why she wants to learn chess. There is a nice relationship that develops between the woman and Kline, but very soft. There are allusions to other factors; is he dying of some disease?; but nothing is pursued. A nice little film when you don't feel too much like thinking about it.

Very good performances by Sandrine Bonnaire and Kevin Kline (in his first French speaking role).

A cleaning lady breaks out of her previous confined existence, but her husband, a simple worker has trouble accepting her new interests.
