Fourteen-year-old Luce reaches the depths of despair when she is assaulted and left on
the cliffs outside of her grim, gray Alaskan fishing village. She expects to die when she
tumbles into the icy waves below, but instead undergoes an astonishing transformation
and becomes a mermaid.
A tribe of mermaids finds Luce and welcomes her in--all of them, like her, lost
girls who surrendered their humanity in the darkest moments of their lives. Luce is
thrilled with her new life until she discovers the catch: the mermaids feel an uncontrollable
desire to drown seafarers, using their enchanted voices to lure ships into the
rocks. Will Luce be pressured into committing mass murder?

While this story feels dark and there is an interesting (if not very believable) mythology behind mermaid transformation, overall, it just isn't satisfying. I know mermaids/sirens are supposed to sing seafarers to their deaths, but these girls, with the exception of Luce, take pleasure in it, even though they were human once, too. True, they were violated and may have lost some faith in humanity, but how could they not feel even the slightest bit of conflict over what they do, killing innocent people? What's worse is that they are all bitchy high school girls, clique-y and jealous, catty and shallow. Also, Luce is kind of a "chosen one" for no discernible reason.

Luce... she lives a painful life, but gets a chance to have another one. Will she trust her new family, and if she does, will they keep that trust or make her miserable like her last family. Starts off kind of slow but is definitely worth reading!

I read this book over the summer, if I remember right, and I loved it. It's an almost primal twist on the classic mermaid tales, and you instantly love Luce.

I really loved this book!! I agree that the beginning is a little slow, but from there it takes off and gets way better! It is a MUST READ!! I haven't read a book this good in a while actually.. XD

Little slow to start but then it took off. Definitely a different approach to mermaids which is awesome because it was a look more at the siren part of it. I'm excited for the next one.

The book was better than I thought it would be. Definatly not for sheltered people of the real world, the characters were complex and the ending left something to be desired. There needs to be a sequal. Great book.

I was very disappointed with this book. I really tried to like it and get into it, but I just couldn't. I almost stopped reading it several times, but I was hoping that it would get better. Sadly, it did not, and I wasted my time reading this book. I do not recommend this book at all.
