This and Pet Sounds stand as masterpieces of the Beach Boys, nearly perfect and flawless. Smile is so strange, so eccentric and non-linear, bizarre and creative- Brian Wilson was at the height of experimental powers (not to mention experimental substances) and his work with Van Dyke here fit perfectly with the Beach Boy's talents. This album should have been released as it was in the 1960's; as it is, we're lucky to have it now, as close the original recording and intention as we will ever see. If you can, pick up the Brian Wilson Smile album as well for a treat.

After all the years of bootlegs, mixes, remixes, unrelated bits and pieces scattered across a couple box sets, Brian's re-boot, it's nice to finally have a legit and authorized edition of the Smile Sessions. This set shows that the experts were wrong, and that Brian had a very cohesive idea of where he wanted this album to go, and almost got there before he broke down under the pressures he was experiencing in those days. Glad to have this next to my Mono/Stereo Pet Sounds

Great to hear this ' lost' album by Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.

This is the possibly the greatest album made in the 1960s- that never got released until 2000's! Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys got back to put this together and release the album that was said to stand up against The Beatles "Sgt. Peppers." Does it? I think it's one of my favorite albums, highly underrated, unusual, and full of so many instruments and harmonies- forget the beach and surfing, this is not that album!

Brilliant as a Brian Wilson/Beach Boys work, generally goofy and disjointed to the casual listener, the majority of this set's first disc - which encompasses the SMILE album as well as a few bonus tracks - is grand, and would've been better than SGT. PEPPER had things life been fair. The second disc is for hardcore fans only, presenting nearly 80 minutes of studio chatter, false starts and unfinished business. 4 stars for the BBs fans, 3 for the curious.
