In the seventeenth century, the English Revolution is under way. The nation, seething with religious and political discontent, has erupted into violence and terror. Jacob Cullen and his fellow soldiers dream of rebuilding their lives when the fighting is over. But the shattering events of war will overtake them.
A darkly erotic tale of passion and obsession, As Meat Loves Salt is a gripping portrait of England beset by war. It is also a moving portrait of a man on the brink of madness. Hailed as a masterpiece, this is a novel by a most original new voice in fiction.

An incredibly moving and devastating story. It’s rare to come across a dense historical novel that is so engaging and easy to swallow (although this is far from a light read.) The setting and historical details are woven in perfectly—it’s clear McCann knows what she’s talking about, but she doesn’t overwhelm you with trivial details or floods of description. The characters and relationships are believable and well-developed, and the narrator is easy frighteningly easy to sympathize with. This novel left me disturbed, unsatisfied, and heartbroken, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable journey and I highly recommend it.

One of the most engrossing, devastating books I've ever read. Maria McCann is a scrupulous researcher, so you can trust her historical references, and yet such a gifted, powerful writer, that this book--and the journey of its antihero and his quest to essentially rejoin the human race--has stayed with me, nearly 8 years after I first read it.

One of the best books I have read for a very long time. Works on all sorts of levels but you may have to work hard at it for a while. Quite strange and disturbing but very worth while.
