Move over Elizabeth Gilbert! No need to stop here, just another unoriginal tale of over-privileged white expats having a midlife crisis. In this edition of Must be Nice, our protagonists decided to quit their high-paying jobs, hoist up the John B sail, and slum it in the 3rd world (whilst living off of the income they receive from renting out their home in Toronto) all the while discovering that other cultures do indeed exist; groundbreaking. Must be nice.

I enjoyed 'armchair' travelling with this author and learning what it would be like to take a long sailing trip. As much as I admire and envy her adventure, it taught me that the work involved in a solo sailing trip is not for the faint-hearted! I will stick to backpacking.

This is a decent read. It's the kind of thing that inspires/justifies a mid-life crisis, as the reader hears all about the two-year sailing trip that a professional, workaholic couple from Toronto take to the Caribbean.

Unlike most travelogues, though, the narrator is neither particularly wise nor very charming - so unlike something by, say, Michael Palin or Ernest Hemingway, we have to hear about the wondrous azure seas and the shining white beaches through the voice of a shrewish, chronically worried little sack of troubles named Ann Vanderhoof. This makes the narrative kind of funny, but only unintentionally, as a petty and timid character investigates a realm that is far more interesting, dangerous, and beautiful than she is.

All in all, I'd recommend it but with a huge caveat: you may find yourself irritated by this author!
