Pete Postlethwaite (the only fictional character) stars as an archivist living alone in the devastated future world of 2055, who spends his days looking at old footage from the years leading up to 2015 when a cataclysmic climate change took place. As he sifts through the relics of our lost and misguided civilization, the archivist asks why Earth's inhabitants did nothing to reverse the effects of climate change while they still had the chance.

Set on a pollution-ravaged Earth circa 2065 this quasi-documentary/sci-fi hybrid stars Pete Postlethwaite as the embittered curator of the "Global Archives"; a stronghold off the coast of Norway built to house the last remnants of terrestrial life as well as the bulk of human knowledge. Looking back on the "Age of Stupid" (1950 - present) he pieces together what led up to the world's ecological and social collapse; a mixture of short-sightedness, corporate greed and unchecked consumerism. In the words of one 80-year old mountain guide, filmed as he gazed upon a shrinking glacier, “We knew how to profit but not how to protect...” A winning combination of actual news and documentary footage coupled with comic book effects which, unfortunately, will only be seen by those who already believe its dire message. Unsettling.

This important documentary frames the issue of global warming in an imaginative future when the consequences of our inaction have overtaken the whole planet.

Juxtaposed with the narrator's entertaining and original scenes in his survival pod high above the surface of the Arctic Ocean, are probing episodes of the destruction of our ecosystems by profiteering energy and natural resource corporate enterprises.

The sad tale of our demise by greed and sloth in the face of dire necessity are played out as memories of the planet itself.

Good - Age of Stupid, The (2009) [Documentary] 92 min. Cautionery tale provided by an archivist from the year 2055 tells the story of how mankind wiped itself off despite repeated warnings of global warming (hence, the age of stupid for which we are living in; present company excluded of course). The film makes some very good points about global warming in an interesting fashion. Lesson learned - our lust for self-indulgence through commercialism is literally killing us. At one point, there's a comparison by continent on the levels of carbon emissions that is done in such as way that anyone could understand that North America is on top of the list and how world leaders are contemplating in rectifying the situation. Second, there's a countdown sort of speak to 2055 by year with all the upheavals that await us - this was absolutely terrifying in presentation. Well done layman's documentary from the UK.

A great movie. It was amazing to see an English lady say that she would do anything to stop global warming and then see her vote against wind turbines because they would spoil the view from her window.
