Although I'm 75 now, this excellent film brought back a lot of great memories of the halcyon days in the 70's of loud, angry pop music: outrageous, free-wheeling, narcissistic, drug and alcohol fueled, gutter lyrics, hedonistic ... a sure-fired recipe for success (and disaster) but that's what the scene was then and what this movie accurately presents. Nostalgic for sure.

Trash movie. 40% sex and the rest of it is stuff we already knew from Vicky Blue's documentary on the band which is a 100x better source because Vicky was in the band and she actually interviews the real band members. This movie ends so abruptly and unsatisfactory its weird. I dont even feel it really delves into the daily lives of the band and their life on tour. Just the pedophilic "sex appeal" of it all. At the end it only mentions the whereabouts of Joan and Cherie!!! What about Lita Ford??

An OK biopic. Difficult to wrap up their career in a 90 minute film.

"Girl's don't play electric guitar."-Joan Jett's guitar teacher
The rock biopic is rife with cliches because rock is rife with cliches. Most movies follow the familiar pattern: humble beginnings, musical inspiration, the hard scrabble early days, the crummy gigs and then the success, the whirl of fame, substance abuse, and sex and the inevitable fall, which sometimes has a redemptive coda. "The Runaways" doesn't veer that far from the formula, but is the rare rock film that's about a female band and directed by a woman (Floria Sigismondi, a video director). The casual fan might just know the band because it's where Joan Jett and Lita Ford got their start. But they were a groundbreaking group in many ways: teenage girls who played their own instruments, wrote their own songs, and took the boys on at their own game at a time when rock was a hostile, masculine environment (it still is to some extent). Critics were unkind to them, including every rock critic's favorite critic Lester Bangs, who said their music "sucks syphilitic rodents" and that he wanted to "defile" underage singer Cherie Currie. What an a**hole. While they hit before punk, their anyone can play guitar ethos, rebellious attitude, and strong image were very much punk. I'm neither a fan of Kristen Stewart, who plays Jett, or Dakota Fanning, who plays Currie, but they're quite good here. The film is based o Currie's book and Jett was a producer and consultant, so it's their story and the other members (Ford, drummer Sandy West, bassist Jackie Fox) are merely supporting players. The great Michael Shannon plays their eccentric, Svengali-like manager Kim Fowely, a controversial character who was at best a bully and at worst abusive. Fox recently claimed he raped her. The movie both acknowledges Fowley's role in the success in the band and shows how awfully he treated them. And, of course, the movie is full of great music. Aside from Runaways songs, there's music from Bowie, the Stooges, and Suzi Quatro, a key inspiration for Jett. This didn't get great reviews, but it's much better than its reputation and for those interested in women in rock, it's an important film. Also see the fictional "Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains."

I remember being happy when i heard about a movie being made on this great band one of my favorites of all time.this was a good movie but it could of been better .you have most of the movie on Joan and Cherrie there close relationship including drug use and sexual relationship . the other girls hardly say anything .all fans of The Runaways know that Sandy was a huge part of the band and there were a lot more things on Kim Fowley that were not in the movie .check out Cherrie's biography for a great book and the full story on The Runaways!

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. Not too bad---good performance.

A well done movie. If you'd like to see where Joan Jett and Lita Ford began this it it. The song Cherry Bomb has gone on to have a life of it's own.

Yes a movie about Lita Ford would be fun. She's still rockin' today and two of her hits, One Shot of Poison and Kiss Me Deadly, would make for some great concert footage.

Definitely not for kids. A good story, well told. Good direction and acting. Great music. And confirmation, once again, just in case you needed it, that people really should wear more silver clothing.

I enjoyed this movie, it touched on a music inspiration that is rarely talked about. Some people on here didn't like the cast. I think the cast worked. More about Lita Ford wold have been cool, but if you research she did not want her story told in this movie. Lita could make her own movie. What I liked it the cast learned to play the songs. You will learn this in the making of on the DVD. This wasn't a Twilight type of movie people. I'm sure they could have kept to the story and went R rating, but they kept it a PG14.
Just think teenagers in the music industry, they could have made the movie much darker. For what it was alot of effort to detail went into the making of this. It rocked.
