A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, police chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation -- a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later. But he's got more than a sadistic serial killer on his hands, for the county's sole female detective, Lena Adams -- the first victim's sister -- want to serve her own justice. But it is Sara who holds the key to finding the killer. A secret from her past could unmask the brilliantly malevolent psychopath .. or mean her death.

The author lives up to her name. Karen Slaughter is daring. Her descriptions of the incredibly horrible crimes against women in her story could only be risked by a female author. My wife had set the book down after the first crime was described with ghastly, cringeworthy detail. I am a huge fan of detective novels, some of them with violent elements. But this book pushes the envelope. I found the constant emotional turmoil, most of it anger, sigh worthy. There is also an incident in the story, near midway, that involved unrealistic police behavior by a key character. Even so, I persevered to the mildly disappointing conclusion. I knew the author was popular and wanted to start at the beginning of her work, hopeful that her numerous works that follow would improve.

This is the first book in the Grant County series and Karin Slaughter starts it off with intensity. For some of the comments from readers that didn't understand why the cancer diagnosis is mentioned but then nothing happens, KEEP READING THE OTHER BOOKS AND YOU WILL FIND OUT. All her books have some graphic descriptions and situations that are not for the faint of heart. Her characters are so real and I have been invested in them through out the entire Grant County and Will Trent series. She is one of the best thriller writers I have ever read so If you like intense, sometimes violent situations coupled with characters that have real struggles and relationships then this author is for you.

Not my style of story... too many descriptive facts... a little slow to start... some info really not necessary...

Pretty good mystery/thriller. A bit gorier than I usually read. I will check out more of the series.

If you get the audiobook, make sure you get the unabridged version. I failed to check and ended up only getting to hear about half the story.

This was okay. Some things kind of felt disjointed. I saw a post about one of the plots in the beginning of the book about telling a family that one of their kids had cancer and how hard that was going to be, etc., and then that's it???? Nothing else. Trying to figure out why the author even put that in there. It really didn't add anything to the story and none of those characters played any other part in the story. Anyway, like I said the book was just okay.
