I think the film was an improvement, but its a good book. I wouldn't call Goldman a great writer, but he's a good and entertaining enough one. The book goes a little more in detail about Doc's life as a spy, which is somewhat interesting, but you get the feeling that Goldman did minimal research on spies. The vague presence of Nazi's in the modern (1970s) era works well in the film, but the lack of exposition in the book does not. Also, the ending and especially the terrifying bathroom scenes in the film are huge improvements. It'd been a while since I'd read fiction, can't say that this book makes me want to read more.
