Very unrealistic. Second part of the movie is better than the first.

DDLJ is a classic. This film was unbelievably romantic, funny, and unlike a lot of Bollywood films, fast-paced. It didn't drag out the plot and Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol are the ultimate pairing. You'll definitely fall in love with this must-see!

DDLJ is one of those timeless films that doesn't wear off with multiple viewings -- and the third longest-running film in the history of movies, worldwide. An excellent date film, and a great intro to Bollywood. In other words: what everyone else said before me

Beloved Bollywood Classic. The sentiment may be lost on non-Indians but this film is the longest running Hindi title in the history of Bollywood, you can still catch it in select local cinemas today, even though it debuted at the box office more than two decades ago.

DDLJ is a landmark Bollywood film for several reasons:
1) It still plays (as of this writing) at the Maratha Mandir Theatre in Mumbai once a day, where it has been shown ever since it was originally released on October, 1995. This makes it the longest first run ever of any film in the world.
2) It supports a love marriage over against a marriage arranged by the parents.
3) The lovers are two NRIs (non-resident Indians), a novel notion at the time for Bollywood subject matter.
4) The intended groom in the arranged marriage, a native of India, is characterized as a person with loose morals and without integrity. A person from the Indian homeland is shown to be unworthy of an NRI bride, while a rascal NRI who behaves properly when necessary is deemed worthy.
5) Amrish Puri, the actor who plays the bride’s father, doesn’t portray a bad guy for a change. This prolific actor is well known for his roles as a villain, most noticeably to Western audiences in the role of Mola Ram in Steven Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984).
6) It is the first film of Aditya Chopra, son of Yash Chopra, a major Bollywood film producer and director.
7) The stars Shah Rukh Khan (SRK, as Raj) and Kajol (as Simran), with this film, cemented their on-screen personas as arguably the best Bollywood screen couple.
8) In the subordinate roles of the friends of Raj, two of them became Bollywood directors in their own right: Karan Johar and Arjun Sablok. Karan Johar directed SRK and Kajol in the popular film Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), as well as wrote the film.
9) Knowing and seeing this film will clue viewers in on all the references and in-jokes about DDLJ that are found in many, many Bollywood films made since 1995.

Despite all that, the film is a typical Bollywood product: a musical, more fantasy than realistic, over three hours long, and steeped in Indian traditions. Its production values do not measure up to Hollywood standards of the day (or now). It is not a great film (see "Dil Chahta Hai", “Black”, “3 Idiots”, "Kahaani", "Mardaani", or “PK” for that), but it is a most likable and entertaining film.

This is a must-see for those seeking to round out their understanding of Bollywood cinema. As noted above, it remains a huge classic hit in India even now. Yes, Indian films have their own characteristics that we westerns must make the effort to grasp and appreciate. It's worth it--if this is your cup of tea!
