Opinion

From Library Staff

Tom just wanted to get out of the house and avoid his Mom's fiancé, but an accident soon finds him trapped in an underground river with just one other person and a dog. To make matters worse a group of murderous treasure-hunters are hot on their trail. A fast paced, fun adventure story. (10+)

Great for a reading group! I lead a 4th grade reading group at my son's public school & we are currently working on this book. I have strong readers - boys - who nevertheless fall into the "reluctant" category, and this has really gripped them. It has some "Hatchet"-like survival aspects but also an almost fantasy atmosphere in places. This week I told each boy to research one of the names from Greek mythology that appear in the book - for instance, in this story of treasure hunters, one is a policeman nicknamed "Sirens." Not, I think, a coincidence. We're getting really good discussions out of it so far.
