Life is not easy for twelve-year-old Erec Rex. His single mother can barely support her six adopted kids. And they've moved into an apartment so tiny that Erec sleeps with the washing machine. Worse, there is a strange force within Erec that is making him do odd things. His urge to obey these thoughts grows -- until it becomes impossible to resist them.

Then one morning, Erec's mother is missing. The force inside Erec commands him to find her, leading him on an adventure that will change him forever. When he arrives in Alypium, a hidden world where old knowledge of magic is kept, Erec learns that his mother and the entire kingdom are in peril. And he might be the only one who can save them.

I LOVE THIS SERIES. I love it how Erec finds a kingdom where magic isn't forgotten under the sidewalk and somehow it's modern and easy to relate to, with all the cell phones, people, and magical techology and knick-knacks. It's REALLY funny and there are a lot of surprising twists and turns, suspects (dun, dun, dun) and the biggest mystery yet -Who really is Erec Rex? (Even if it says in book 3) I'M SOOOOO SURPRISED THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T EVEN NOW ABOUT IT! IT SHOULD BE FAMOUS!!!!

This is a very fun and funny opening book to a series of 7. It got me from the first magic toothbursh. Loosely inspired by the labours of Hercules, this series is a favourite with my kids. We anxiously await every new book (book #5 just came out in Feb 2012) and its smart intrigue, horrible villans, twists and turns. There are strong female characters who support Erec, and a host of magic that is just downright fun. I can't believe this series is not on more best of lists. It deserves to be. Its WAAAAAY at the top of mine, along with The Kronos Chronicles and Princess Academy, and all 4 of Shannon Hale's Bayern books.
