A #1 New York Times bestseller from the fantasy author who is legend herself: TAMORA PIERCE. In this second book in the Beka Cooper Trilogy, Beka uses her unique magic and street smarts to solve a dangerous mystery!

Is Beka ready for her first real mission?

Beka Cooper is having trouble settling into the Provost's Guard. In just five months as a full member, she's already gone through four partners. But now she's teamed up with the renowned Dog Goodwin and an even more famous dog--a scent hound named Achoo. Part of a team at last, Beka is sent on a special mission to Port Caynn. Once there, she delves deeper into the dark underworld of Tortall and learns that corruption extends beyond the Rogue's Court of criminals. It would be risky to continue to investigate, but Beka's not one to give up the scent. Even if it means ending her career . . . permanently.

The Beka Cooper Trilogy introduces an amazing young woman who is the ancestor of one of Tamora Pierce's most popular characters: George Cooper. Here, Pierce gives fans exactly what they want--a smart, savvy heroine making a name for herself on the mean streets of Tortall's Lower City--while offering plenty to appeal to new readers as well!

"Tamora Pierce's books shaped me not only as a young writer but also as a young woman. She is a pillar, an icon, and an inspiration. Cracking open one of her marvelous novels always feels like coming home."
-- SARAH J. MAAS , #1 New York Times bestselling author

"Tamora Pierce didn't just blaze a trail. Her heroines cut a swath through the fantasy world with wit, strength, and savvy. Her stories still lead the vanguard today. Pierce is the real lioness, and we're all just running to keep pace."

I like this series but I have to say, her romance disappointed me. Dale is not someone I'd expect her to countenance and I found him extremely presumptuous. Given her integrity, her easy acquiescence to his advances seems odd.

I loved the book before and I loved this one. I had no doubts if I would love this book. It was so different from the first one but it was just as good.

Beka Cooper becomes an apprentice "dog" with the nose of a bloodhound in ferreting out criminals in the land of Tortall. A sophisticated, dangerous adventure to read for the older adolescent/teen

2nd in this series, this story was really amazing! I loved it! I'm not really into police-drama/mystery, but Pierce's writing style, her enchanting characters, the suspense and the action really make this a beautiful read!

Two of my favorite genres, police procedural mystery and fantasy, come together in the Beka Cooper series. In this second volume of the trilogy, Beka is now a full-fledged Dog, a member of Tortall's police force. Beka's struggle to find a full-time partner who fits with her intense style of Dog-work is interrupted by the appearance in Corus of a large number of counterfeit coins. Soon, through hard work and a few coincidences, Beka is assigned to the counterfeiting case as well as to the handling of a scent-hound named Achoo. The search leads Beka and her former training Dog Goodwin to Port Caynn where they must play the part of corrupt, lazy Dogs and use all their resources, including Beka's ability to talk to dust spinners and the dead who ride on the backs of pigeons, to uncover who is at the root of the plot.

There's a charming new love interest for Beka and it's nice to get to see her have some fun, but I missed the members of Corus' Court of the Rogue who were introduced to us in the first book (not to mention Pounce!). It will be interesting to see where the third book in the trilogy goes - I actually think Beka could carry an ongoing series, but then I wouldn't get to see what Pierce does with the rest of the Tortall world or her Circle of Magic universe. Really, Pierce just can't write books fast enough for me.

AMAZING BOOK. great characters, (again) questionably okay plot, could be better. But seriously, Beka + Dale = O_o
yeah... she slept with a guy she knew for like a week. Really?

This book was well written. Though I don't like the part where she sleeps with the banker... that got me mad... I really hoped that she would get together with Rosto... The book was great... I can't wait for the third book :D

Yup! Tamora Pierce is an awesome writer. I can't wait until the next book comes out! But I can't believe that it's going to be the last one for this series. T_T
