Gay Rights Activist. Friend. Lover. Unite-er. Politician. Fighter. Icon. Inspiration. Hero. His life changed history, and his courage changed lives. In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum. From senior citizens to union workers, Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and became, before his untimely death in 1978, a hero for all Americans.

Such a powerful story about a great man Harvey Milk! A bio about gay right activist and community leader, who was assassinated in 1978 in San Fran. The assassination was followed by an organized march of 30,000 people in honor of Harvey and San Fran major George Moscone, who was also murdered.
The ridiculous defense of the murderer got even into my forensic psychology classes - simply unbelievable. The verdict was outrageous and lead to "The White Night Riots", the most violent uprising in the history of the gay movement.
The movie was long, but worth of watching.
Sean Penn as Harvey Milk excelled as always.
A must watch movie!

I found it painfully hard to get into this film. I shut it off & feel I avoided losing 2 hours I wouldn't otherwise get back.

Harvey Milk was a mild-mannered Jewish insurance salesman from New York who went on to become the first openly homosexual American to hold public office when he was elected to the San Francisco board of Supervisors. In doing so he not only advanced the cause of equality (both gay and non-gay) but also raised the ire of religious bigots and their uber-conservative mouthpieces, Anita Bryant and John Briggs. You can’t justify the unjustifiable armed with nothing but hatred and a few bible quotes however and the attempts of the fledgling moral majority to consign gays to the back of the bus only served to galvanize the community further. Sadly, his career came to a sudden end when fellow Supervisor Dan White, a troubled man with an inferiority complex the size of California, murdered him, along with Mayor George Moscone. Van Sant eschews his usual enigmatic approach and presents us with a straightforward, beautifully polished story told in one continuous flashback as Harvey sits at his kitchen table recording his memoirs “in case of assassination”. Through the seamless use of archival footage, incidental music, and vintage clothing he manages to evoke a sense of time and place, which, while remaining authentic to the era, conveys a sense of immediacy that hasn’t dimmed in 30 years. Sean Penn gives what could well be his greatest performance to date, aided in large part by a tremendous supporting cast, most notably Josh Brolin’s passionate portrayal of the cowardly White. Milk is an inspiring testament to the life of a great visionary, delivered with the force of a classical tragedy and made all the more moving by the fact he was an actual person. Essential viewing.

This is a good a biopic as I have ever seen. Sean Penn is fantastic. A previous commenter made mention of Milk's ties to Jim Jones. Let's be clear that their association pre-dated the overtly cultish activities of Jones, who in his early San Francisco years was mostly known as a preacher whose congregation was racially integrated - very unusual at that time. Milk didn't know him well, and this was years before Jones really went off the rails, and many years before Jonestown. A side issue.. but everything does have a context, and there's no way that Harvey Milk was responsible for the tragedy at Jonestown.
