The day after they moved in,
Coraline went exploring....

In Coraline's family's new flat are twenty-one windows and fourteen doors. Thirteen of the doors open and close.

The fourteenth is locked, and on the other side is only a brick wall, until the day Coraline unlocks the door to find a passage to another flat in another house just like her own.

Only it's different.

At first, things seem marvelous in the other flat. The food is better. The toy box is filled with wind-up angels that flutter around the bedroom, books whose pictures writhe and crawl and shimmer, little dinosaur skulls that chatter their teeth. But there's another mother, and another father, and they want Coraline to stay with them and be their little girl. They want to change her and never let her go.

Other children are trapped there as well, lost souls behind the mirrors. Coraline is their only hope of rescue. She will have to fight with all her wits and all the tools she can find if she is to save the lost children, her ordinary life, and herself.

Critically acclaimed and award-winning author Neil Gaiman will delight readers with his first novel for all ages.

Definitely different from the movie, and that was refreshing! All ages can enjoy this book and the character of Coraline.

What a creepy book! If you like Tim Burton movies or other Gaiman novels, you will like this.

I can see why this book has become a classic. The descriptive prose is so well done that you can see everything Coraline does. The underlying themes of overcoming our fears and loyalty are well presented. Now I need to take a second look at the movie!

Coraline is a short disturbing story about young, witty, imaginative and clever Coraline Jones whose story begins with a little door. The book is filled with both creepy and outstanding characters that come into Coraline’s life. For a child reading this it is a wondrous book of the perfect life that can be given to a child. For a parent it is not as wondrous but frightening. Coraline is written in a way that both children and parents see such differences. The book has blooming flowers and bright lights hiding parent neglect and out right horror. Coraline will have shivers running down your spine and give new perspective of black buttons and cats.

Children's stories usually depict home and family as safe , loving and secure. Not so with Neil Gaiman. He turns them into creepy and decidedly unsafe places.

I read this book only because it was our book club choice. I don't really enjoy fantasy/horror stories, even if they are aimed at children as this one is. Coraline is an only child of parents who both work at home on their computers and so have no time for her. She yearns to be the centre of the universe, for someone to pay full attention to her, and she finds all that behind a locked door in her apartment. But, is that what she really wants. The writing is good and carries you along nicely through all the eerie, creepy sights and events Coraline has to deal with to come to a happy ending.
