Eve is eight months pregnant and in the middle of a Thanksgiving celebration when she discovers that her husband Jonathan has developed an intimate relationship with a woman over the past year. Jonathon asserts his innocence (an affair involves physical intimacy, and he didn't have any), while Eve feels deeply betrayed by the emotional connection he shared with someone else. What Jon has done seems so terrifyingly out of character that Eve finds herself questioning her entire reality. Did she ever really know Jon at all? Was their happiness together a lie? Is emotional intimacy more forgivable than sexual intimacy? And can their marriage survive?

During Thanksgiving, Eve overhears her husband, Jonathan, on a suspicious call. Why did he leave the room and why is he speaking so softly into the phone? Jonathan wouldn’t cheat… after all, Eve is 7 months pregnant with their second child and they have a happy marriage. Or do they? Shaken to the core, Eve confronts Jonathan and finds out about Laney (the other woman). Enraged, Eve throws Jonathan out and begins to read his email to find out about his secret life. We find out that Jonathan never slept with Laney- a key point as far as he is concerned- but that doesn’t change the sense of betrayal for Eve. The book progresses as a question: is cheating really cheating if sex isn’t involved?
This was an interested book due to the nature of the topic. The writing was average and the story wasn’t as gripping as I thought it could have been.
Two and a half stars (out of five).
