As the story begins, a lonely woman vanishes while out on her morning run. Then a 22-year-old girl never returns from a walk. An old man disappears too. When fresh-faced policewoman Freya Graffham is assigned to the case, she runs the risk of getting too invested--too involved--in the action. Alongside the enigmatic detective Chief Inspector Simon Serrallier, she must unravel the mystery before events turn too gruesome. Written with intelligence, compassion, and a knowing eye--in the tradition of the fabulous mysteries of Ruth Rendell and P.D. James--The Various Haunts of Men is an enthralling journey into the heart of a wonderfully developed town, and into the very mind of a killer.

Hill writes well, and her ghost story The Woman in Black is a favorite. Although this is well written, too, and interesting, it's fine as a story set in an English town, but if you're looking for a straight-forward mystery, this might not be for you either. It's 562 pages long, by the way, so not for the impatient.

My first Susan Hill novel, but I should have read the comments.
I found the unnecessary romance annoying and the language
(especially around those parts) often predictable and trite.
I'll try one more, but, based on this, I'm not hopeful.

A bit too far on the romance side of mysteries for me but I've been reading steadily in spite of that - compelled to finish it so there are redeeming qualities.

Some tightening up of the story lines would have been appreciated and I found the print variations in my edition off-putting.

I give it a 2 - perhaps a 2 1/2

This is a very exciting book, although gruesome at times.
Unexpected ending.
I look forward to reading more of this series.

Although I will not be finishing this book, it appears 1/3 of the way through to be a Harlequin dressed up as a Thriller Mystery.

The series is apparently about Simon Serrailler, but he appears as a very minor character only.

A better edit would have helped too; it looks as though the book were rushed to market.

Apparently the next book is better but I am not sure I will bother with it.
