Marisol Guzman has deferred college for a year to accomplish two things: She will write a novel and she will fall in love. How hard could that be? She gets her very own apartment (with her high school best friend as roommate) and a waitressing job at a classic Harvard Square coffeehouse. When she enrolls in an adult education class -- "How to Write Your First Novel" -- there are two big surprises waiting for her: John Galardi, aka "Gio," a fellow zine writer who fell head over heels for her last spring (despite the fact that she's a lesbian) and her instructor, Olivia Frost, the most exquisitely beautiful woman she's ever seen. But as Marisol ventures into what seems to be her storybook romance with Olivia, things start to go off track. Between the ups and downs of her new relationship, her strained friendship with Lee (a newly out lesbian who is crushing big-time on Marisol), and her roommate's new boyfriend (who is equally afraid of Marisol and their cat) moving in, Marisol starts losing sight of her goals. Is she too blinded by love to see the lies?In this long-anticipated companion novel to the Printz Honor BookHard Love, which critics called "A bittersweet tale of self-expression and the struggle to achieve self-love," Ellen Wittlinger offers a novel just as emotionally honest and deeply felt.

Marisol is an 18 year old lesbian. Living with her gay bestfriend Birdie, whom she has known for 12 years, in an apartment that she can barely afford rent without her mothers help. Marisol decided that she wants to write a novel during her gap year, before leaving to go to Stanford. To help her with this goal she enrolls in an adult centre novel writing class in which she meets the love of her life, as well as someone from the past. Olivia Frost, the beautiful teacher is one that she admires from a far only to grow closer and closer to her. Gio, a boy that fell for her even though she is gay becomes a close friend again once they put the awkwardness behind themselves. Marisol has a crappy job working at a coffee shop which is where she meets a newly out of the closet girl named Lee. When Marisol develops a relationship with Olivia, she notices Lee is falling for her. Through all of the ups and downs in her life, Marisol realizes the lies she has been told and how her relationship was built by lies. I really enjoyed this book and finished in a day! I give the book 4 stars because it was enjoyable although the climax didn't happen until nearly the end of the book. I also think that they could have developed some of the characters a bit better even if they weren't important towards the main characters. Overall this book is a great easy read for the summer!

This book was okay. Not that exciting, but not to terrible either. Doesn't reach climax until last few chapters.
