Somewhat unusual blend of gritty, dirty realism and dark, grown up fairy tale. The results are unsettling and unpleasant. This is a reissue of the original 1978 novel with an introduction by Rick "Ice Storm" Moody. The more recent novel of the same title by Victor LaValle is far better.
