This award-winning series reveals the full and fascinating stories behind famous works of art, not just how they came to be created, but also how they influenced others and came to have a life of their own in the modern world. The works of art featured here are both instantly familiar and profoundly mysterious. Revolutionary in their conception, and iconic years after their execution, they each have their own compelling stories. For behind the beautiful canvases and sculptures are tales of political revolution, wartime escapes, massive ego clashes, social scandal, financial wrangling and shocking violence.

These are very good programmes, if a bit traditional. Beautiful photography, informed narration by people who appear to have done their research well. If it had not been for Simon Schama's "Power of Art" series, I would have rated these outstanding. Schama adds such passion, that his programmes can convert the non-lover of art history into one; these ones are preaching to the choir.

Absolutely fascinating and illuminating series about the history and background of various pieces of art. Stellar.

Pop evaluations of famous works of art: sometimes insightful (van Gogh's sunflowers, The Resurrection), sometimes tedious (a large chunk of the Grande Jatte program is wasted speculating whether certain characters are "real", e.g. local prostitutes.) Sharp if jokey editing, reflective of the artwork; for example, Michelangelo's David = buttocks.

It covers the life circumstance and the styles of each painters with emphasis on the influence of their styles. As a quick reference, this movie is quite valuable.

Michelangelo's David is 5.17 meters or about 17.0 ft tall and weighs 6 tons !!! He carved the marble statue without modern tools for over 2 years when he was in his mid-twenties !!!
