In this volume the narrative starts with the pre-Renaissance painter Giotto and proceeds with the early members of the movement such as Van Eyck, Uccello, Masaccio, Piero della Francesca, Botticelli, and Bosch, and continues with the later painters, Leonardo da Vinci, Durer, Michelangelo, Raphael, Titian, and Brueghel. In letters, Dante and Chaucer lead into the more typical Renaissance writer Cervantes.
