Instant Karma
Book - 2020
In New York Times bestselling author Marissa Meyer's young adult contemporary romance, a girl is suddenly gifted with the ability to cast instant karma on those around her - both good and bad.
Chronic overachiever Prudence Barnett is always quick to cast judgment on the lazy, rude, and arrogant residents of her coastal town. Her dreams of karmic justice are fulfilled when, after a night out with her friends, she wakes up with the sudden ability to cast instant karma on those around her.
Pru giddily makes use of the power, punishing everyone from public vandals to mean gossips, but there is one person on whom her powers consistently backfire: Quint Erickson, her slacker of a lab partner. Quint is annoyingly cute and impressively noble, especially when it comes to his work with the rescue center for local sea animals.
When Pru resigns herself to working at the rescue center for extra credit, she begins to uncover truths about baby otters, environmental upheaval, and romantic crossed signals--not necessarily in that order. Her newfound karmic insights reveal how thin the line is between virtue and vanity, generosity and greed . . . love and hate... and fate.

Add a CommentInstant Karma by Marissa Meyer is a heartwarming and utterly adorable YA contemporary romance centered around Prudence Daniels, a girl who suddenly receives the power to cast instant karma on anyone who she deems fit; magically balancing the good and evil around her. A big Beatles fan and a hard worker, Prudence is the essence of a studious teenage girl. Her antithesis, Quint Erikson, seems to be a slacker and surprisingly immune to her power. Travel through the world of karaoke, first kisses, and cute sea animals while you watch Prudence learn the weight and limits of her power!
I grabbed this as a new audiobook based on the cover and I had no idea it was a teen novel. That said - it's quite fun! Imagine being back in high school with the gift of doling out instant karma on those who do you wrong. A good time for any age!
“Instant Karma” is a standalone romance novel starring Prudence Daniels, who gains the ability to cast instant karma. The characters of this book were very unique, especially Prudence. The author portrayed her as a flawed individual, which made it even better to see her change her ways. But the book was realistic in showing this change. There were many cute moments where I just couldn’t stop smiling. It was written wonderfully and was interesting from beginning to end. The ending was unexpected, but I still enjoyed it. Meyer really knows how to write adorable scenes that’ll make you squeal. There were lots of musical references, especially the Beatles, hence the name Prudence. It was very entertaining to read while teaching some valuable life lessons. This book contains enemies-to-lovers romance. There were also lots of cute sea animals mentioned, making this book even more loveable. Overall, a very charming, enjoyable book that I would recommend to romance readers. 4.5/5 stars

The twist ending is what makes me like this book. Though I dislike the main character I do like the guy she is frenemies with. The author should make a book all about Quint because he is a far more interesting character than Prudence.
It's a light fluffy read from Marissa Meyer set in contemporary times, and although Prudence does indeed get the power to unleash karma on folks, she learns that perhaps she's not always right....A nice weekend read for curling up with a hot drink
I loved the coastal town feel of this book. I also loved the environmental focus and the fact the protagonists are having real world impacts with what they're doing. It encourages readers to be active in their community.
I will warn you this book seems REALLY innocent and then BAM you are attacked with A SCENE out of nowhere. It's still PG but like just. You're just left going, okay... wow we're here. Most of the book though is just cute 'they can't possibly love me as much as i love them' romance.
I thought Prudence's family was interesting. They didn't have a big individual impact on the story except for maybe Jude but together they were important to the story. I like it when parents are involved and the family relationships just felt real.
The premise of the story doesn't honestly play a huge part of the story. Don't get me wrong, it definitely shapes the story but it isn't actually that big a part of the story. Having said that it is an interesting power.
I did like the ending. It's not surprising or twisty or anything but it's just nice. Some of the more vindictive readers amongst us might disagree but I think it worked out.
I have not read the book yet but looking at the title it looks like an awesome book, i'
m not reading the description because i'm afraid it will have spoilers
I cannot say enough good things about this book!! Super light and "carefree" exactly the kind of book we all need in 2020. Love Marissa and all her works and can't wait to see what she comes up with next 💕
a contemporary YA from marissa meyer that is no lunar chronicles, but is well plotted as expected.
This was possibly my favorite teen read of 2020! I always love Marissa Meyer, and this rom-com was a departure from her usual genre, and is an instant winner. Pru is a straight-A student. Her bio partner, annoying and constantly tardy Quint Erickson, arrives halfway through their class presentation having changed her ideas and report, but it's Pru who gets the lower grade? She is super angry, and is forced to swallow her natural feelings to beg him to re-do the project with her; this time opting to volunteer at his mom's struggling marine biology center. Weirdly enough, Pru has noticed some karma happening with people who hurt someone else, but it doesn't affect Quint? A rivalry to romance in a quirky beach town where Quint and Pru come to discover they're worth more as a team than alone. When I finished this book, I wanted to start it over again immediately. The perfect thing to read in a pandemic that's funny, flirty, and heartwarming. Bonus that it carries a save-the-animals theme. I bought my own copy immediately!
