Dwight Birdwell's sixteen months in combat in Vietnam were a mirror of the larger ware effort. Serving as a tank crewman, Birdwell started as a gung-ho soldier in a well-led, hard charging cavalry troop. After the Tet Offensive, however, the atmosphere changed. By the time Birdwell finally rotated home, morale was shot and malingering, marijuana, and defeatism were the order of the day.
