Unlike most Western movies there was very little dialogue in this movie. There were certainly no long diatribes or confessions. Most of the character development came from actions. I was hoping for more insight into the mood and rage of the students in the Tiannamen square massacre. Instead I found the simplicity and squalor of the living conditions of the University students very intriguing. As interesting and as well done as the movie is it left me with more questions than answers about the changing face of China.

"Summer Palace" was a romantic and love narration about youth in China experiencing youth friendship and life as a student in Beijing University life. a snap shot film based in reality setting in life's in the 70's growing up and explore the world after university and struggle to adapt into society in China and find life abroad in Europe to establish a life in post "Mao era" to set a new life and hardship as a youth.

It's quite possible that the subtitles left out some of the meanings, as some developments weren't too clear to me, yet I totally enjoyed this film. The film was banned in China and the director was prohibited from filming for 5 years, which is really too bad, as this was certainly one of the most contemporary and sophisticated Chinese movies I've seen, not being dragged down by the nationalist propaganda that plagues so many of them. Great acting and engaging romantic drama amongst a backdrop of historical events.

This movie promised so much and delivered so very little. It follows the lives of several students who lived through the Tienanmen Square massacre, yet only touches upon it briefly and hints at far too much, leaving you rather confused. All the bed hopping doesn't help, neither the little understood angst suffered by the main characters (which may be cultural, so maybe that's why I don't get it). I don't recommend this film.

Don't be tempted by misleading advertising on the box, promising revolutionary sex scenes. The young adults in this film turn everything in their lives--including their sexuality--into a dreary, meaningless, amoral dial tone. All I can add is that maybe my negative experience was made even worse by a bad translation from Mandarin into English.
