This is a French take on the famous DH Lawrence novel, and one that is fairly well done. But at 2hr 40mins it is a tad long. Also, on this disc the video quality is so-so. Overall, it is a worthwhile watch. In French with subtitles.

Who would have thought that a film with this title, and based upon a novel freighted with so much extraneous baggage, would actually be so fresh, vibrant and compelling? In this telling, there are three equally important awakenings for these two characters--one sexual, one romantic, and one about the class system. And all of them are handled with great sensitivity and ease. Excellently done. The only slight quibble is to be found in the very "Frenchness" of the adaptation. Meaning that there is an awareness of the value of sensuality from the very beginning here, and not enough portrayal of the formality and artificiality of these lives. After all (and risking the delicious possibility of being misunderstood), one truly might say that there is no race stiffer than the English.

This movie is another Madame Bovary story. Only this time, this Madame is educated a wealthy. This time the story has a happy conclusion: love for nature can combine successfully in a beautiful net of sensibility and love.

Sexual Content: Nudity and sexual situations, as one would expect from the story.
