Michael Clayton (George Clooney) is an in-house fixer at one of the largest corporate law firms in New York. At the behest of the firm's co-founder Marty Bach (Sydney Pollack), Clayton, a former prosecutor from a family of cops, takes care of Kenner, Bach & Ledeen's dirtiest work. Clayton cleans up clients' messes, handling anything from hit-and-runs and damaging stories in the press to shoplifting wives and crooked politicians. Though burned out and discontented in his job, Clayton is inextricably tied to the firm. At the agrochemical company U/North, the career of in-house chief counsel Karen Crowder (Tilda Swinton) rests on the settlement of the suit that Kenner, Bach & Ledeen is leading to a seemingly successful conclusion. When the firm's top litigator, the brilliant Arthur Edens (Tom Wilkinson), has an apparent breakdown and tries to sabotage the entire case, Marty Bach sends Michael Clayton to tackle this unprecedented disaster and, in doing so, Clayton comes face to face with the reality of who he has become.

If you are listening to the news in early 2018, you've been hearing about a lawyer who is a 'fixer' for the current president. What is a fixer, you ask? Watch this legal thriller and find out! George Clooney is riveting in his portrayal of the title character - a lawyer who is masterful as the fixer for a big New York law firm, but veers off his approved role when his colleague - and friend - dies under mysterious circumstances. Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson add to the list of performances to savor. Moral conflict was never more compellingly acted and plotted.

Fantastic script, taut and succinct. Fantastic acting by all the principle, secondary and extras.
George Clooney was born for this role. This is the role that will change your mind about George C. being a one note actor.
Tilda Swinton and Tom Wilkinson are nothing less than fantastic in their roles.

Recommended to everyone out there that appreciates a tight script and awesome acting...

Rating the movie 4/5 stars, I suggest this version since the special commentary feature by writer/director Tony Gilroy and editor John Gilroy provides important insights into the story besides their views of constructing and telling a story. No one else could carry the title character as well as George Clooney. Having Sydney Pollack in a film in whatever role adds so much; this movie is a star higher than the average just because of him.

Can't review this because I didn't watch it. Good reviews so maybe I'll watch it some other time.

Tried it again. Boring!

Not that you should judge a movie by its title, but this is possibly the blandest title of 2007. Don't people get paid to come up with better titles? They might as well called it "Lawyer Guy vs. Big Corporation" or something. That aside, this is a well acted, if predictable, film about ethics, character, & coroporate malfeasance. Clooney is great, Tom Wilkinson freaks out, and Tilda Swinton won an Oscar for really not doing much (she was better as the witch in "Narnia"). It has a bit of "The Insider" feel to it.

Very good film. One of Clooney's better films. T Swinton and T Wilkinson are also very good.

This is a 2007 American legal thriller written and directed by Tony Gilroy.
It chronicles the attempts by attorney Michael Clayton to cope with a colleague's apparent mental breakdown, and the corruption and intrigue surrounding a major client of his law firm being sued
in a class action case over the effects of toxic agrochemicals.
Michael is a "fixer" in a prestigious New York City law firm, using his connections and his knowledge of legal loopholes for his clients' benefit.
But doing an underground poker game doesn't go along with his character at all.
As an attention-grabber, Michael drives despondently and stops at a remote field, where some horses are standing on a hill.
When he leaves his car to climb up the hill to admire the horses, the car explodes behind him.
This scene really drives you into the film.
It is a morally alert, persuasively realistic and increasingly suspenseful thriller.
The performances of the protagonist and other supporting actors and actresses are so superb that the film will keep you engaged in the story.

Michael Clayton is a janitor of sorts. He’s a company lawyer who specializes in clearing the names of guilty clients as long as they have the cash to pay for it. It’s not that he’s an evil man, but his personal values are often forced to take a backseat to the financial pressures imposed by his messy divorce, failed business venture, and expensive gambling addiction. His professional life is a high-pressured mix of dubious ethics and legal loopholes aimed more at maximizing company profits than insuring justice is done. But when one of his esteemed colleagues suffers a mental meltdown it jars him out of his own moral paralysis and he is forced to confront the creature he has become. This is a brutal and despairing film that is as infuriating as it is mesmerizing. Shot in somber hues of blue and grey it presents us with a bleak corporate landscape filled with lost souls and an all-consuming hunger...for money, for power, for prestige. Yet there are unexpected moments of purity amidst the debris; the plot of a child’s fantasy novel provides a mystical subtext to the main story for instance, and Clayton’s sudden epiphany on a mist-shrouded hillside has an undeniable spiritual intensity to it. When the ending came it was not unexpected, but I found myself on the edge of my seat just the same. Michael Clayton may not be a unique film but it is written with great style and intelligence, not to mention the wonderful performances. Very well done.
