The young Jane Austen wishes to be a writer. Her mother thinks otherwise. Although she is offered many marriage proposals she accepts none until the mischevious Thomas Lefroy shows up and turns her world around. At first she finds him ignorant and self centered but as she gets to know him, they start to flirt and eventually fall in love. Thomas' relatives disagree with the match and threaten to disinherit him if he marries her. Jane's mother also disagrees with the match. As a result of this, Thomas tries to convince Jane to runaway with him. Instead, Jane stays with her family and ends her affair with Lefroy. She begins to write some of her greatest works of all time. Lefroy becomes the inspiration for Mr. Darcy in the novel, Pride and Prejudice.

Oh well...I guess not everyone has the same image of the real Jane Austen that I do.

This movie was a total waste of time. The completely invented plot seemed contrived to include any possible situation that happens in one of Austen's books and make it happen to her. Silly piece of fluff, in my opinion.

My friend was the one who recommended this to me, and although some parts were cute and good, I thought it would've been better. But it was interesting to watch, considering i don't usually watch these types of movies :)

A terrible movie and an insult to the genius of Jane Austen. The romance between the two lead characters is ho hum and is ridiculous for that time. This is not a period piece at all as it reflects modern ways than for that time frame - some of their behaviour would have been considered outrageous for that period! It's a shame to insult an amazing writer such as Jane Austen - to make her out to be such a person as portrayed in this movie, so far from the truth, makes it a really bad movie. Don't waste your time.

A pretty little love story, based on people that Jane Austen *did* know, and situations which occurred in different ways, but the actual thread of which never did happen. For example, Austen *did* know Lefroy, and *might* have started to form on attachment, but his *aunt*, who was a *friend* of Austen's, moved him along. The period and mores are well done, but Anne Hathaway, lovely though she is as an actor, simply is not believable as Austen.
