The instant #1 bestseller.

"This taut and terrifying book is among the most closely observed accounts of Donald J. Trump's shambolic tenure in office to date."
- Dwight Garner, The New York Times

Washington Post national investigative reporter Carol Leonnig and White House bureau chief Philip Rucker, both Pulitzer Prize winners, provide the definitive insider narrative of Donald Trump's unique presidency with shocking new reporting and insight into its implications.

"I alone can fix it." So went Donald J. Trump's march to the presidency on July 21, 2016, when he accepted the Republican presidential nomination in Cleveland, promising to restore what he described as a fallen nation. Yet over the subsequent years, as he has undertaken the actual work of the commander in chief, it has been hard to see beyond the daily chaos of scandal, investigation, and constant bluster. It would be all too easy to mistake Trump's first term for one of pure and uninhibited chaos, but there were patterns to his behavior and that of his associates. The universal value of the Trump administration is loyalty - not to the country, but to the president himself - and Trump's North Star has been the perpetuation of his own power, even when it meant imperiling our shaky and mistrustful democracy.

Leonnig and Rucker, with deep and unmatched sources throughout Washington, D.C., tell of rages and frenzies but also moments of courage and perseverance. Relying on scores of exclusive new interviews with some of the most senior members of the Trump administration and other firsthand witnesses, the authors reveal the forty-fifth president up close, taking readers inside Robert Mueller's Russia investigation as well as the president's own haphazard but ultimately successful legal defense. Here for the first time certain officials who have felt honor-bound not to publicly criticize a sitting president or to divulge what they witnessed in a position of trust tell the truth for the benefit of history.

This peerless and gripping narrative reveals President Trump at his most unvarnished and exposes how decision making in his administration has been driven by a reflexive logic of self-preservation and self-aggrandizement - but a logic nonetheless. This is the story of how an unparalleled president has scrambled to survive and tested the strength of America's democracy and its common heart as a nation.

My key take away from this book is that we elected as president a gent who is not serious and has been winging it all of his life. There is no strategy to anything he does. He demands loyalty and returns none which has led him to be surrounded by the C team.

Being an avid listener of MSNBC and shows like Hardball, The Beat, and All In, there wasn't a lot of new material here but if you don't often follow those shows this is a great read. That it's written by two Washington Post Pulitzer Prize winners lends gravitas to the story and what a story. As we barrel from one crisis (or media-created crisis) to the next we forget the news of the previous day. It's all laid out here, for better or worse, right up to the "perfect call" but stopping short of Trump's impeachment and Covid-19. I personally can't wait to get back to having a quiet president, one who doesn't tweet.

Excellent summary of the last days of the Trump campaign for the presidency to the whistleblower's revelation of Trump threatening bribes of two consecutive Ukrainian presidents -- From the Mueller Report -- "Although the investigation established that the Russian government perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secure that outcome, and that the Campaign expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through "Russian efforts."

👤 In America, anyone can become President. That's the chance you take.

Carefully researched and footnoted, well written, a terrifying look at an insecure, uneducated, bully.

Based on hundreds of hours of insider interviews, A VERY STABLE GENIUS chronicles the Trump Administration from the beginning to shortly after the “perfect” call with the Ukrainian president. Washington Post’s Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig have written a remarkably detailed and factual account that is very readable. Like Bob Woodward’s FEAR, GENIUS presents a portrait of the current administration that is both objective and damning. Oh, how I wish it was a work of fiction!

“Others noticed that the president was obsessed with knocking down as inferior what his predecessors had built. ‘His whole DNA is, whatever anybody else has done is stupid, I’m smarter, and therefore that’s why he goes around breaking glass all the time,’ one senior Republican senator recalled. ‘He’s torn a lot of things. He likes to break things. But what has he put together yet?” - pp. 151-52
