Costa Prize winner. Excellent. This novel tells the story of a young working class lad who becomes a gunner in WW II. Here he finds comradeship, meaning and a sense of family which he never experienced before. He is shot down and becomes a prisoner of war. In 1949 he participates as an extra in a film about the war as a way of going back to find where he lost himself. It is a novel of remembering and hope which is extremely well-written.
